Student Accommodation Security

Student flatshares are amongst the most high risk properties when it comes to burglaries and theft, however there are several security precautions which you can make to prevent you and your flat or house from becoming a victim.

Burglars will generally only approach a premises where it is easy to enter and there are few obstacles between getting in and getting out, therefore it is advisable that you take certain precautions, including:

  • Closing all windows before you go out
  • Do not leave items out in the front and back gardens that could be used to aide entry
  • Keeping valuables out of sight, including door keys
  • Never leaving a spare key hidden around the outside of the property
  • If living in halls of residence or any accommodation that has an intercom to “buzz” people in, be careful that you know the person and tell them to be mindful of people lingering outside who are seeking access to the premises

Burglars thrive on premises where there are signs that the occupants are away, such as during summer, Christmas and Easter breaks as this gives them the confidence that they will not be disturbed whilst committing the act. Tell tale signs of this include:

  • Free newspapers and post building up in the letter box or on the door mat
  • Items being delivered and left on the doorstep
  • Unlit houses in the dark
  • Closed windows and doors when its extremely hot weather

With some of these there are no precautions, but there are certain things which can be done to avoid being broken into when you are away, but these will generally be for the landlord to resolve:

  • Temporarily cancel milk and newspapers for the period you are away
  • Install timers to switch lights on and off at specific times
  • You could ask a neighbour to turn some lights on and draw curtains at night time
  • Ask a neighbour to move all mail from your door mat or post box
  • Consider getting a dummy burglar alarm fitted to the front of the property

However, we cannot stress to you the importance of contents insurance. This is often very cheap and will cover you from theft or damage to your property. Sometimes, your parents can add your student house or flatshare to their own cover.
